8 tips to ace your first day of work

Congratulation on landing a new job! So now how are you preparing for your first day in your new workplace? Majority of us are focusing too much on securing the position that rarely spends much time considering the plan afterwards. Instead of worrying about what can possibly go wrong, here are 8 tips to help you handle your first day of work better at your new workplace!

Dress Appropriately

For dress code, check with the HR department on the dress code policy before your first day of work, but there is this saying “always better to be overdressed than underdressed”. So, to be on the “safer” side, just put on a smart outfit on your first day. Instead of pulling out outfits that you had recently bought, just stick to the old usual work outfits as you will be working for long hours and wearing something comfortable will give you a sense of comfort and make you feel confident as well. So, start planning your outfit in advanced and prepare them before you sleep.

Packing Of Office Essentials

Think about what are some essential items you will need in your new workspace? Essentials items can be a water bottle, Post-It notes, tissues and writing materials like pen and notepad. List them out and pack them into your bag the night before you sleep.

Sleep

The first day on your new job can be intimidating, but no one will expect you to be an absolute pro on your first day or even first month of work. So, don’t think so much and try to go to bed earlier than usual to get plenty of rest as your first day of work can be mentally draining. Reading or listening to soothing music can help to relax your mind and probably induce you to sleep. Before heading to bed, remember to set your alarm to a time that gives you sufficient time to prepare and commute to your new workplace.

Breakfast

Get up early and have a nutritious breakfast, even if you don’t feel like it. Having a low Glycemic Index (GI) foods for breakfast is important as these foods provides high energy but has a slow release rate, so it makes sure that you are not crashing halfway in the morning. Such food can be oatmeal, eggs and low-fat yoghurt.

Arrive Early; Don’t Be Late.

Take note: Never be late on your first day of work. Showing up late on your first day of work is one of the worst things you can do as a new hire as lateness is often perceived as unreliable. It is important to give a good impression to your new boss and colleagues so plan out your commute time. Try commuting to your new workplace before your first day to get a rough idea on the commute time during the morning  Give some time allowance in your commute as you never know if you might unexpectedly bump into any sticky situations that can impact your commute time.

Be Sociable

Stepping into your new workplace, try to smile and be sociable to your new colleagues. It may seem to be a daunting task, but you will be working closely with them. So, step out of your comfort zone and take the initiative to introduce yourself to your new colleagues. Being a new hire, there will be many things you will be curious about your new company, so this can be an initiative topic for you to break the ice between you and your new colleagues. Your new colleagues will definitely be curious about you as well. Hence, there is a possibility that you will be invited to join them for lunch, so accept their offer as this is a good opportunity to bond with your new colleagues. But be mindful of the conversation and never speak ill of your previous colleagues or employers to your new colleagues.

Ask Questions

Stepping into a new working environment, I’m sure that there are many questions to be asked. So, don’t feel embarrassed when seeking assistance as it is just part of the course in any new job. Take notes wherever possible and just ask again if something is still not clear. Making mistakes in a new workplace during your first day is just part and parcel of the learning experience, so don’t be too strict on yourself!

Express Gratitude

Before heading home, you should thank your new boss for allowing you to join the team. Aside from your boss, you should acknowledge your new colleagues that you have ended work for the day and thank them for guiding you through your first day.

As we heard the news, our big Merlion, located in Sentosa, is leaving. Meaning to say Mr Merlion has been terminated, retrenched or he just simply quit. It’s sad to see our big employee leave but it may be for the best.

The Merlion stood tall since 1995 and has served many people as a tourism point. Some may even consider him to be the eighth wonders of the world.

It is usually sad to see our friend leave the grounds. Everyone cherished good times together. Always being the centre of attention.

Although, its best to see it in a different light. Better things and opportunity will come. Expecting greater things to happen in the future.

The Sentosa Merlion will continue to stay in our hearts.

Similarly, to our friends and colleagues who left the company, it's difficult to say goodbyes as they have contributed much in the company and left to remember their legacy.

We should remember the good and instead, end it with a good note and be happy that another company is lucky to have someone like them in the company.

In recent news (see here), there’s a 20-year-old PMD rider who collided with an elderly woman, who was riding on a bicycle, at Bedok area. The rider was arrested for the act while the victim got admitted to an Intensive Care Unit with aggravated injuries. Unfortunately, did not make it through.

In another news (see here), various in-home fires broke out and much more related to PMDs as its battery left overcharged and exploded, causing a fire to spread in home.

Now, a surge of petitions to ban PMDs is surfacing. Due to negligence and irresponsible owners. But does banning PMDs solve the recent negative happenings or does it take away jobs to those people who use PMDs to do odd jobs and deliveries?

Instead of banning PMDs in helping to reduce dangers in pavements, we can also see that it will not be helpful to jobs at all. I mean might as well ban cars since there are almost a lot more incidents every week due to careless drivers.

Some may argue, “but if no PMDs, then use a bicycle or motorcycle to do the deliveries then!”
Sure, but how many people can own a motorcycle? How many people have a decent bicycle or are they using PMDs because they have leg mobility issues that are why they chose to do this? PMD is such a big word as it also includes E-scooters, seated PMDs for elderly, and motorised wheelchairs etc.

With PMDs, may be beneficial to odd job workers. I know some poor folks got themselves a PMD, more specifically an E-scooter, to work for grab food as it’s an easy job to have a good salary. Others benefit by having a good side income as a food delivery personnel.

Not just food delivery, we can look into the neighbourhood postal services which packages are delivered by odd job workers can benefit from PMDs.

Elderly people or those who have motor issues with their legs can benefit from PMDs to travel short distances with ease.

Not just those who use PMDs, starting companies who sell PMDs brings out more job options to retailers to sell the product and technicians to fix the devices. As Singapore would be moving to a smarter nation, we can see PMDs as a new way of life of fast-paced and in-demand services towards logistics, deliveries and engineering.

Who else can benefit from using PMDs? As for now, options are yet to be explored.

What do we mean by a high-performance employee? How does one look like? What makes you think they are better than the rest?

There's various definition out there when you google an employee that is performing to your expectations but we lay down to the most conclusive detail for what most employers including us lookout for when it comes to looking out for our staff that deserves a spot as the employee of the month!

1 - Everything is under control even when in difficult situations

You do not need to remind them that the dateline is near, they know that it's near, they will finish what they do and meet most of the criteria. Asking on their progress seems too not needed as they are autonomous, and you can trust them to put their thoughts in the game.

Sometimes, we are in a pinch if a client gives us an impossible dateline to finish a job. Our 'friend' will always find the best way to streamline the workflow to come to a closure of the project. Without any compromises.

2 - Thirst to learn and to question and upgrade themselves to improve their knowledge

Sometimes, during life everyone hits a wall, they will do what is necessary to overcome the wall by looking for answers with those who are more knowledgeable, they will bring questions to the table to discuss with the co-workers to overcome obstacles. Under no circumstances, they will stop looking for new knowledge to apply in their work.

To move forward, our thinking should always be forward-thinking, questioning ourselves how and why. Why did it work? Why didn't it work? How to get to the conclusion? How to avoid such missteps.

3 - Not a leader but still leading together

They are willing to slow down to help their co-workers to catch up to their speed. We may go too fast in terms of work, an employee who pauses just to see and teach their co-workers to match up to his speed and lead together to push the boundary in the organisation. They show compassion and will leave no man behind.

4 - They take initiative and takes on leadership opportunities

When there’s a problem arises in the company, they would be the first to step in without creating any politics, rather, avoiding it and taking in a leadership role to lead the team. They will jump into any possible opportunities to leap the companies forward, improving the system.

5 - They take feedbacks positively

We may not like the feedback given even if it's negative. For Singaporeans, this will break their ego and for a high potential employee, they are willing to take a hit and learn from mistakes to improve on the productivity and adapt to open a new window to opportunities.

6 - They recognise their weakness and do a workaround to compensate it

The smartest people always have a way to overcome their weakness, such weakness like mine is that I would miss out small details and overlook spelling errors. I would have people to help me check the details of the artwork, so at least it's confirmed with 2 eyes watching. It's always a game of helping each other in return for a good reward.

Large quantity of thick smoke spreads from Sumatera and blanketing Singapore and our neighbour, Malaysia, with high PSI levels gradually increasing every hour making our visibility on the roads and horizon dense than ever.

Close to 1000 school closures in Malaysia for the safety of their wellbeing. Hospitals stacking up numbers with people seeking treatment for their breathing problems, because of haze.

Large number of restaurants with outdoor dining are declining in numbers, private hire drivers having problems in road visibility and pretty much cleaning the dust off the cars.

With the haze now reaching a dangerous level in Singapore, we best prepare ourselves with measures to prevent any more damage to our health and prevent the drop-in our productivity in work.

Staffs working indoors with air-conditioned offices are less at risk than of those working outside in construction areas.

As for now, we must wait till the haze clears after the forest fires are lesser or when the weather starts to rain to clear the harmful dust and particles in the air.

As my own advice, you may still get the facemask when walking outdoors. The cheaper mask is still as good, if not, better than the thicker N95 mask because it's breathable and the dust particles will not go through the masks.

Image result for surgical mask

The usage of the N95 masks are meant for those viral particles from spreading as the viral particles are smaller. And it is not advisable for anyone with breathing problems and panic attacks.

Employees working and starting to feel sick, are advised to seek medical attention and drink as much water. As an increase medical cases related to breathing and eye irritation/dryness are surfacing.

Image result for fruitsBoost your immunity to prevent the drop in your working productivity by eating immune-boosting foods such as kiwi, oranges and pineapples OR vitamin supplements.

AND DON’T FORGET TO DRINK AS MUCH PLAIN WATER!

Stay safe during this haze-y period.

What will the most wanted jobs be like 5 years down the road?

With Singapore shifting forward digitally in the economy, workspace and recruitment, we will see a surge of application in positions such as Cyber Security Specialists, Data Analysts, UX/UI Designers and other Infocomm Techonlogy (IT) roles.

This would be difficult for newcomers as there will be a steep learning curve in IT. As IT is changing every decade, no, every year, in terms of performance, processing and productions. Many technologies have brought up in the recent years that has boost the financial sectors as well such as blockchain. (bitcoins etc.)

The finance sectors, would need to have more security to handle cyber attacks. Speaking of finance sectors, the finance side will still see a demand of tax compliance as the need of a strong technical understanding and familiarity of regulatory rules, stakeholder engagement and management skills.

Our way of work will be automated one day, replaced by robots and other AI infrastructures making our way of life easier and more convenient. For now, we look forward on how to adopt these functionality and be conservative regarding changes in the organisation.

We should be quick in adapting as the world is everchanging. One Nokia was once held the best in mobile manufacturing, as they were late to the party, they were not able to grasp the situation and their shares drop in one fell swoop. Nokia ended their statement, quote: “we didn't do anything wrong, but somehow, we lost”

The Human Resource Decision Makers (HRs) should be focusing on acquisitioning IT to digitize work in HR technologies such the HR Information Systems. Outsourcing for HRs, they can easily focus on other important task while the measly task can be done by the outsource.

Looking forward, these are the sectors that will be high in the demand: Finance, engineering, technicians, IT.

How far have we come to this day?

9 August 1965, Singapore achieved her independence. Even when years passed, some jobs stay while other jobs were gone throughout history.

How far have we evolved from a fishing village to a multi-racial, multi-national independent island state?

Let's take a look:

When it was 50 years ago, how did our Singaporeans look for jobs?

Many years ago, most job seekers applied blindly. Through word of mouth, advertisements such as newspaper advertisements, radio or TV.

Now, you would approach your search by applying and sending in resumes to job postings on Facebook, emailing, and various online job portals.

What will the future be when you look for jobs? Would you be staying at home doing your jobs as you are self-employed/freelance OR would you actually go to other countries just by flying by your own large drone?

What kind of career was available 50 years ago?

Image result for sampan singapore 1960Back then, jobs available such as farmers, rat catchers, knife sharpeners, mail sorters, cattle ranchers, switchboard operators, analogue drafters, I can go on. Most of these jobs become scarce, some of them evolved and a lot of them has been taken over by technology.

Right now, there's social media recruiters, blockchain specialists, IT Software engineers, and most of the jobs that evolve one to overcome tech disruption and embrace it.

What about the future? How will it look like?
I've made an article on what jobs look like 100 years into the future, take a look.

How do people travel to their workplace back then?

Image result for travelling singapore 1960

Simply put, you remember those old videos you saw on the TV. It's basically the same but now there's no sampan, no trishaws, walking on foot for kilometres. All transport is readily available for our local commuters. You can't really imagine how those people have a really hard time dealing with heat in the bus. Remember, back then got no air-con hor...

Now, everyone wishes to be transported by driverless cars and flying drones to work. Best yet, teleport there so you can go to work on time without your boss screaming at your face for your punctuality!

I think that's least of the common questions kids ask how was the past like for our locals.

So once again, we wish our nation happy birthday!

Have you ever been in a position where you missed the opportunity to actually release yourself from a difficult situation? It seems like the door got locked shut while you were busy contemplating whether you should leave your company or not. Then suddenly, you missed the chance to leave. What other choice do you have?

It's time to make a change. My dear readers, having an opportunity in front of you is not based on luck. With patience, hard work and dedication, you are able to create that opportunity to get yourself out of a messy situation.

Imagine that YOU are in a room, the big metal door with no handle is locked, since you were contemplating in that room for hours the door shuts itself, the door only opens for a few hours for every 6 months. You are only equipped with a small hammer, the kind that you use to tenderise the meat.

The only things you are wearing are your clothes and a watch. This watch, it only goes backwards, counting down from 1000h to 0 when you are in that room. It will start to countdown once the door closes. Once it goes to 0, your life ends. It resets when you are in another room.

What will you do?

Just like any life situation, you would want to try out everything possible to get out of the room. The little hammer, you will try to best to hit every obstacle. Hitting the door proves pointless, as it is a metal door unlike any other. Hitting yourself is the last thing you want to do. Hitting the wall seems to have some dent, after a while hitting the same dent, the wall starts to break, leaving a hole...

With 513h left on the watch, you are able to make a hole big enough to proceed to the other side of the room. But the room is in a different and better setting. The watch now resets to 1000h, this time with 2 doors. Once you are in the room, will you doom to make the same mistakes again?

The whole point here is that you must not be afraid to press on forward and try any possible method to get out of the situation you are in. You have the power to make opportunities. But bad situations will still follow you unless you make a change.

Mistakes are unavoidable, but the same mistakes shouldn't be repeated.

Make use of your skills, skills you learnt from the past bad experience you were in. The door to opportunity is always open till it closes. Whether the other side of the bridge is good or bad, under the situation you are in, you must always strive to change the present.

Before I would even start to list down the future jobs. Let’s take a step back and see what jobs have been taken away. Make a guess. Plus, I don’t even know that these jobs even existed!

  • Ice cutters
  • Lamplighters
  • Switchboard Operators
  • Rat catchers
  • Human Alarm Clock

Ice Cutters Circa 1800s

Ice Cutters, they cut ice from cold places and to export them to neighbouring countries. Back then, fridges weren’t even invented yet. People used to light oil lamps as their profession, the lamplighters. Human Alarm Clock, heh, those people back then either wake up early in the morning or not sleep at all. Just to wake up another lazy bum in the morning.
In the era of where everyone starts to have a phone at home, with all the phone wires dangling on the streets, there were switchboard operators (I heard monkeys replaced them at first).

Image result for extinct jobs
Rat Catchers

I’m not too sure about rat catchers though I mean the pest busters still exist. Because it evolves into another profession.

Looking back, it’s just a few decades back. Now, if we could imagine the possibility of jobs getting replaced or evolving into another job. What are the possible jobs that could be replaced?

Now, we are in the era of where human starts to play around with Artificial Intelligence or A.I. for short. Many tech companies are making way to driverless cars, automated systems and we also have robots which are expected to replace news anchors. Well, most of you might have known about that first robot which was granted citizenship in Saudi Arabia.
Like, wow. Kind of funny though when in the future, robots must apply for a visa to travel to Singapore and apply for jobs. (laughs). But that sort of possibility can be extremely true. It’s scary.

Google Self-Driving Car

Ai/Robots will replace delivery, taxi drivers, cooks, local provision shop vendors, payroll, HRs. A.I. will get a lot smarter. Our most powerful PCs will be as small as our handhelds. You won’t need designers to create intricate designs as you only need to imagine what is on your mind to make the design pieces.

As more and more technologies and machines are being developed, there will be a need of more software engineers, programmers, developers and IT specialists as well as technicians to fix problems and continue to develop even smarter A.I.s and programmes.

Well, designers could become obsolete. Maybe evolve into a different name like ‘Imaginators’. Imagining things to create products in various software where people others can’t imagine. Jobs evolve to adapt to the changes. That will be my thought of what jobs would be like 100 years in the future.

So what's your thought? What will the jobs be like 100 years later?

How can HR develop their competencies?

Competencies are the abilities and characteristics of an individual possess to do the job properly and using it in appropriate ways to achieve the desired results.

In HRM, there are four essential activities to achieve a high-performance work system to maximize the employee’s skills and commitments: staffing, training and development, motivating and maintaining the high-performance work organisation. Let’s discuss more details in the below section.

Staffing: Human resource planning, recruiting and selecting

Human resource planning, recruiting and selecting is designed to ensure that the need for human resources of the organisation will be constant and appropriately met.

The basic objective of human resource planning is to determine the numbers of employees with the required skills, knowledge and correct attitude to perform the job to achieve and fulfil the organization's goals, objectives and visions. Therefore, the proper utilization of human resources will be the final determination of company success.

In this challenging market, every organisation will attempt to attract, invest, develop, and retain a talented workforce. It is important to adopt a recruitment method, to attract the most qualified candidates to fulfil the current and future workforce needs. Once the required pool of candidates’ database is collected, the selecting process takes place, choosing the right employee through interviews, employment testing and background checks to fill up the vacancies.

Hence, a proper selection and decision making plays an important part of successful HRM.

Some organisation recruitment activities focused on attracting skilled and experienced employees who are ready to support the customer. Using different internal and external recruitment method, such as through newspaper, internet job posting, outsourcing, campus recruiting or referral scheme.

The campus recruiting has given the opportunity for students to have a better understanding of some organisation, which also helps to enhance organization's employment reputation in this challenging market.

Training and Development: Knowledge, skill and ability (KSA), orientation and manager development
Employee’s orientation is essential for new employees to understand the organisation policies and procedures, mission statement and familiarizing the workplace.

Human Resources invest heavily in training and development that can benefit the organisations. It not only helps the employee to grow but also increases the competency and productivity of the workforce while improving the quality of products and services.

The aim of management development is to improve the performance of managers by providing knowledge, changing attitudes, or increasing skills levels, thereby improving the performance of each individual. Hence, it is important for the organisation to identify the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) of each employee.

A successful organisation is always keen in providing different training opportunities for employees to satisfy their growth ambitions which give them a more exciting career path. Providing internal development programmes, such as foundation development, professional development, personal development, and management and leadership development programs.

All programs are available for different level of employee depending on their job requirements and development needs. These programmes aim to help and enhance the employees' strength and weakness, motivate them to seek opportunities and eliminate internal and external threats.

Motivating: Pay and performance appraisal

Performance management consists of the following processes; identify, measure, evaluate and reward employee performance at work.

Performance appraisal is always linked to compensation or reward. It helps the employee to maintain motivation and morale as well as keeping down the employees’ turnover rate. In some organisation, employees are appraised according to the performance management cycles. The objective setting is always planned at the beginning of the year that allows the employee to set their objectives for the coming year.

During the mid-year review, the appraiser will collect feedback from the employee and assess whether is there any additional amendment required for the objectives. During the year end final appraisal, the appraiser and employee will review the objective set at the beginning of the year. Follow by evaluating the employee’s knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA), and also provide an excellent opportunity to identify their performance, career interest and developmental need. Individual

Development Plan (IDP) is also part of the performance management; this allows employees to work with the manager to establish three-year development roadmap. With IDP, the manager will identify the employee development needs as well as helping them to move towards the right career path and achieve their development goals.

Employee incentive plans are another way to motivate the employees. Some organisation uses d the long term incentive plan to the executives by giving a free share scheme which represents in between 20% to 50% of the annual variable salary at nominal value. Besides the long-term incentive plan, the organisation has introduced an international employee stock purchase plan, which offered to subscribe the organisation shares at discounted price.

Maintaining: Workplace, health, safe (WHS), labour, management and relations (LMR), commitments

A strong employee relationship is also an important aspect in every organisation. Code of ethics, fair treatment, healthy and safe working environment and freedom of association are some key criteria to making that possible.

All organisation should provide a healthy and safe environment for all of their employees, minimizing or eliminating all health and safety risks within the workplace. Ergonomics is one good area to focus as most IT oriented company have most of their employees working in the same position for at least six to seven hours a day in front of the computer.

Some organisation constantly provides pieces of advice and handouts to employees on the ergonomics surrounding their computer equipment, to minimize body and eye strain.

The Hidden Stress

Superman. We all do hope to take on the stress like Superman. Solving every problem at work. Taking on new challenges. Swallowing the bitter pill to achieve every objective. But even superman has stress, 1 man cannot take on the whole world. That's why he needs the Justice League!
Different types of stress from different Industries.

Salesman clinching every deal to achieve their sales target to attain their commission.
Service Officer attending to every enquiry of the customer, solving every issue that customer faced yet may get scolded by angry customers.
Engineer ensure diagrams and calculations are accurate and able to carry out implementation successfully without suffering error and losses.

These are just some examples whereby different job roles, do their very best to achieve the KPIs yet withstanding the stress that comes along with it.

So how much stress can we put up with? How long can we sustain with such stressful lifestyle?

Look out for the symptoms
Do you notice body changes due to stress? Some experience hair loss, weight changes, mood swings, sleepless nights, dragging feet to work and many more reasons to be listed.

Why are we feeling the stress?
One, we could be overwhelm by work and need to work overtime for long period of time. We do hear from friends rushing their projects and deadline for weeks and months, getting little rest time for sleep and goes to work everyday. Sometimes, these friends gone missing from our radar for quite some time till we hear from them again about completion of their last project.

Two, some may need to perform and deliver work at top notch quality for every minute. Just to name some jobs that may be monetary sensitive, critical systems, affecting lives of others and etc.

Third, we could be afraid of losing our job. When we know we cannot deliver work that is up to expectation, we will feel down, hence losing motivation and underperforming. This is the point where we are afraid of losing jobs to competent colleagues.

However, these are not one many factors contributing to stress. How about external factors?

External factors such as family issues and money management can affect us too. We may worry about large expenses such as housing costs, or over relationship issues, hence losing focus at work.

Managing Stress
So how do we manage stress the way we manage work?

Well, listen to happy songs, because sad, emotional ones would only make us feel worse. Take a break, plan a holiday, or talk to someone, listen to their opinions and get different perspectives on handling certain matters, or take up a new hobby, and let this cut down time spent on working overtime.

These are some examples that cause us to supress our own feelings and needs and unknowingly walk ourselves into depression.

Take me for example; I am bad at handling stress. I do pressure myself in hope to perform better at work, but instead under-delivering.
However, I have come to realise that I need to relax and work smartly.

There are many workaround solutions to make things work and make us perform better. We need to find the right method for ourselves.

Slow down our pace and take a breather.
