In recent news (see here), there’s a 20-year-old PMD rider who collided with an elderly woman, who was riding on a bicycle, at Bedok area. The rider was arrested for the act while the victim got admitted to an Intensive Care Unit with aggravated injuries. Unfortunately, did not make it through.

In another news (see here), various in-home fires broke out and much more related to PMDs as its battery left overcharged and exploded, causing a fire to spread in home.

Now, a surge of petitions to ban PMDs is surfacing. Due to negligence and irresponsible owners. But does banning PMDs solve the recent negative happenings or does it take away jobs to those people who use PMDs to do odd jobs and deliveries?

Instead of banning PMDs in helping to reduce dangers in pavements, we can also see that it will not be helpful to jobs at all. I mean might as well ban cars since there are almost a lot more incidents every week due to careless drivers.

Some may argue, “but if no PMDs, then use a bicycle or motorcycle to do the deliveries then!”
Sure, but how many people can own a motorcycle? How many people have a decent bicycle or are they using PMDs because they have leg mobility issues that are why they chose to do this? PMD is such a big word as it also includes E-scooters, seated PMDs for elderly, and motorised wheelchairs etc.

With PMDs, may be beneficial to odd job workers. I know some poor folks got themselves a PMD, more specifically an E-scooter, to work for grab food as it’s an easy job to have a good salary. Others benefit by having a good side income as a food delivery personnel.

Not just food delivery, we can look into the neighbourhood postal services which packages are delivered by odd job workers can benefit from PMDs.

Elderly people or those who have motor issues with their legs can benefit from PMDs to travel short distances with ease.

Not just those who use PMDs, starting companies who sell PMDs brings out more job options to retailers to sell the product and technicians to fix the devices. As Singapore would be moving to a smarter nation, we can see PMDs as a new way of life of fast-paced and in-demand services towards logistics, deliveries and engineering.

Who else can benefit from using PMDs? As for now, options are yet to be explored.

Employers and HR decision makers should take note of these key amendments:
  1. -  Core Provisions extended to all employees
  2. -  Additional protections (hours of work, overtime pay and rest days) extended to more employees
  3. -  Enhanced flexibility for employers
  4. -  Employment dispute resolution framework enhanced
  5. -  Recognise medical certificates (MCs) from all doctors for paid sick leave

Before the amendment, The Employment Act does not cover Core Provisions to Managers and Executives (M&Es) earning above$4,500/ month.

In addition, the Act only provides a set of additional protections such as on hours of work, rest day and overtime pay. Part IV of the Employment Act (EA) covers workmen earning up to S$4,500, and non-workmen earning up to S$2,500. They are collectively known as Part IV employees.

Currently, wrongful dismissal claims are heard by MOM, whereas salary-related claims are heard by the TADM (Tripartite Alliance for Dispute Management/ Employment Claims Tribunals). M&E can seek help if they have served the employer for at least a year.

In terms of recognising the medical certificates today, employers are required under the Employment Act to accord paid sick leave only if the medical certificate (MC) is issued by Government and company-appointed doctors.

How far have we come to this day?

9 August 1965, Singapore achieved her independence. Even when years passed, some jobs stay while other jobs were gone throughout history.

How far have we evolved from a fishing village to a multi-racial, multi-national independent island state?

Let's take a look:

When it was 50 years ago, how did our Singaporeans look for jobs?

Many years ago, most job seekers applied blindly. Through word of mouth, advertisements such as newspaper advertisements, radio or TV.

Now, you would approach your search by applying and sending in resumes to job postings on Facebook, emailing, and various online job portals.

What will the future be when you look for jobs? Would you be staying at home doing your jobs as you are self-employed/freelance OR would you actually go to other countries just by flying by your own large drone?

What kind of career was available 50 years ago?

Image result for sampan singapore 1960Back then, jobs available such as farmers, rat catchers, knife sharpeners, mail sorters, cattle ranchers, switchboard operators, analogue drafters, I can go on. Most of these jobs become scarce, some of them evolved and a lot of them has been taken over by technology.

Right now, there's social media recruiters, blockchain specialists, IT Software engineers, and most of the jobs that evolve one to overcome tech disruption and embrace it.

What about the future? How will it look like?
I've made an article on what jobs look like 100 years into the future, take a look.

How do people travel to their workplace back then?

Simply put, you remember those old videos you saw on the TV. It's basically the same but now there's no sampan, no trishaws, walking on foot for kilometres. All transport is readily available for our local commuters. You can't really imagine how those people have a really hard time dealing with heat in the bus. Remember, back then got no air-con hor...

Now, everyone wishes to be transported by driverless cars and flying drones to work. Best yet, teleport there so you can go to work on time without your boss screaming at your face for your punctuality!

I think that's least of the common questions kids ask how was the past like for our locals.

So once again, we wish our nation happy birthday!
