If you are new to job search on Facebook, you might want to follow this initial steps on building a list of jobs acquisition via Facebook. So, we believe that you have already created a facebook account to start your job search.

So one thing to note is to prepare your resume and necessary documents/ portfolios and work relevancy to the job you need. While on this topic, we may want to go various ways to find jobs through Facebook job groups, adding recruiters or the recently launched Facebook Jobs.

We require you to follow as many jobs groups, search for ‘jobs *country name*’ on the Facebook search bar eg. Jobs Singapore and go to the group tab. There will be a list of jobs interest groups for you to follow and do follow all of them. Once, you get accepted into these groups, we are ready to start following my tips.

1) Search for jobs by using the search bar inside the job group

In all of the facebook group, there is a search bar for you to use. Not many know of this function as they thought it’ll be the same function as the normal search bar on top of your Facebook page. But in retrospect, by typing your job position, Facebook will retrieve all the jobs posted to the related to your search in the group. Thus making it easier to view the jobs recruiters posted in the group.

An example is as shown:

2.      2) Add the recruiters as your friend

Example of a recruiter
-        I know its privacy and some people don’t like to get added but many are quite open to getting added as friends, especially the recruiters are on Facebook to help job seekers. You can directly contact them for jobs and will usually post their job postings on their timeline too.

3.       3) Dress for the job you need and not for the job you have.

-          I personally think this is the quote to go by when you create your Facebook account and writing resume. As truthful as it is, recruiters may visit your profile to see and understand what you do for a living. As you have added them as friends, or you have Private Message (PM) them for jobs, they would want to know whether you are a real or not.

This is an example of how a fake account looks like, which recruiters will avoid you and remove you as a friend:

Example of a fake account.

It's empty. So, what you might want to do is to update your profile with your photos. Write more about yourself and your achievements.

Also, resumes, on the other hand, its to write honestly about yourself. Include your latest achievements and documents. So when you go for an interview, the HR have already know you and praise your honest achievements.

4) Finding jobs which are not scams.

Have you ever encountered a certain job post that seems too good to be true?
Jobs in Canada posted in Jobs in Singapore group, Eg:

Example of a fake advertisement

Obviously, you don’t inquire about this sort of advertisement because it's just too good to be true.

Another example would be jobs that require you to hand over your money even before meeting the recruiter. Find out if the agency is legit by searching for their EA ID or their agency name on google. Then, look for the recruiter's name if he is there.

You can visit MOM site to search for their EA number in the Employment agencies and personnel search (EA Directory) if it's legit.

(Example of an Employment Agency profile on MOM site.

Step 5 – Apply as many positions as possible

If you found the job that you were looking for on Facebook and PM’d the recruiter, keep looking for more. Chances are, over 1000+ people are also applying for the same jobs as you.

At the end of the day, the recruiters would probably have to settle all the applicants one by one. It’ll be a few more hours if the person would reply back to your application.

Most of the times, you may want to keep updated on the groups with new job posts. So what you are going to do is to set your group notification to all. So, when there are new jobs available, you’d be the first one to get notified and you may apply for the jobs advertised.

Enabling to get notified on all posts in the jobs group

To end off this blog, I can say that job search on facebook would be a good experience for you to start finding jobs because, despite its downside such as fake advertisements, you learn from your mistakes and probably evolve on how you do jobs searches on not just Facebook, but other online platforms as well.

What will the most wanted jobs be like 5 years down the road?

With Singapore shifting forward digitally in the economy, workspace and recruitment, we will see a surge of application in positions such as Cyber Security Specialists, Data Analysts, UX/UI Designers and other Infocomm Techonlogy (IT) roles.

This would be difficult for newcomers as there will be a steep learning curve in IT. As IT is changing every decade, no, every year, in terms of performance, processing and productions. Many technologies have brought up in the recent years that has boost the financial sectors as well such as blockchain. (bitcoins etc.)

The finance sectors, would need to have more security to handle cyber attacks. Speaking of finance sectors, the finance side will still see a demand of tax compliance as the need of a strong technical understanding and familiarity of regulatory rules, stakeholder engagement and management skills.

Our way of work will be automated one day, replaced by robots and other AI infrastructures making our way of life easier and more convenient. For now, we look forward on how to adopt these functionality and be conservative regarding changes in the organisation.

We should be quick in adapting as the world is everchanging. One Nokia was once held the best in mobile manufacturing, as they were late to the party, they were not able to grasp the situation and their shares drop in one fell swoop. Nokia ended their statement, quote: “we didn't do anything wrong, but somehow, we lost”

The Human Resource Decision Makers (HRs) should be focusing on acquisitioning IT to digitize work in HR technologies such the HR Information Systems. Outsourcing for HRs, they can easily focus on other important task while the measly task can be done by the outsource.

Looking forward, these are the sectors that will be high in the demand: Finance, engineering, technicians, IT.

Employers and HR decision makers should take note of these key amendments:
  1. -  Core Provisions extended to all employees
  2. -  Additional protections (hours of work, overtime pay and rest days) extended to more employees
  3. -  Enhanced flexibility for employers
  4. -  Employment dispute resolution framework enhanced
  5. -  Recognise medical certificates (MCs) from all doctors for paid sick leave

Before the amendment, The Employment Act does not cover Core Provisions to Managers and Executives (M&Es) earning above$4,500/ month.

In addition, the Act only provides a set of additional protections such as on hours of work, rest day and overtime pay. Part IV of the Employment Act (EA) covers workmen earning up to S$4,500, and non-workmen earning up to S$2,500. They are collectively known as Part IV employees.

Currently, wrongful dismissal claims are heard by MOM, whereas salary-related claims are heard by the TADM (Tripartite Alliance for Dispute Management/ Employment Claims Tribunals). M&E can seek help if they have served the employer for at least a year.

In terms of recognising the medical certificates today, employers are required under the Employment Act to accord paid sick leave only if the medical certificate (MC) is issued by Government and company-appointed doctors.

Top 5 Reasons Why You Should Enroll for our FREE 2-Day Job Readiness Workshop!*

Many jobs will be taken over by Artificial Intelligence:

As most of you know, as many as 8 Million jobs will be replaced by 2020 by emerging technologies with the advancement of Artificial Intelligence and various push-and-pull of innovation scattered around the world such as Driverless Cars and Unmanned Drones.

But let's look into the modern society as we have progressed quite significantly. Right now, we use smartphones which brought much convenience to our daily lives. Even automated machines to produce various of our daily use of items in factories in a matter of minutes whereas it took hours or days to produce them back a century ago with manual labour.

Singapore will be one of the nations that Embrace Technology:

That is where many companies are adopting technology over manual labour to increase efficiency and accuracy at a lesser cost. Now, many of the jobs in Singapore are already automated! One example is such software that allows efficient model in employment and payroll to replace Human Resource for a better calculation and candidate filtering.

Other than that, companies like Grab and Deliveroo made our lives a lot easier in booking taxi and food delivery. As such, many people have to undertake courses to upgrade their skills to be relevant in the modern and future working industries.

Upgrade in Skills:

What sort of skills are you willing to invest in? Maybe you would want to do a career switch to work on engineering, technicians and Infocomm technology sectors? It would be advisable to embrace various knowledge to be relevant in the working industries.

Our current industry will soon change as we walk into the 4th industrial revolution in artificial technology. Technology will change quickly in a few months rather than a few years. As many people nowadays would want to take courses to improve their soft skills in communication, negotiation and adaptability.

A Culture of Changing Your Mindset:

When you are able to change your mindset, you will be able to change the whole world the way you see it. Have a role model to follow, avoid being stubborn but determined to do things you always wanted to do, only if you are able to adapt to changes to the working environment in your current or future organisation.

Nurture Adaptability and Creativity:

Many professionals stress the importance of being adaptable to situations and changes in your workplace. As you learn, you evolve to assess situations and creatively manage problem-solving and able move a step ahead of the competition.

In this perspective, we find new ways to improve and challenge ourselves by stepping out of the comfort zone so the next time a problem arises, we know how to go around it or tackle the issue.

Quote from a Sun Tzu :

" The art of war teaches us to rely not on the likelihood of the enemy's not coming, but on our own readiness to receive him; not on the chance of his not attacking, but rather on the fact that we have made our position unassailable. "

How far have we come to this day?

9 August 1965, Singapore achieved her independence. Even when years passed, some jobs stay while other jobs were gone throughout history.

How far have we evolved from a fishing village to a multi-racial, multi-national independent island state?

Let's take a look:

When it was 50 years ago, how did our Singaporeans look for jobs?

Many years ago, most job seekers applied blindly. Through word of mouth, advertisements such as newspaper advertisements, radio or TV.

Now, you would approach your search by applying and sending in resumes to job postings on Facebook, emailing, and various online job portals.

What will the future be when you look for jobs? Would you be staying at home doing your jobs as you are self-employed/freelance OR would you actually go to other countries just by flying by your own large drone?

What kind of career was available 50 years ago?

Image result for sampan singapore 1960Back then, jobs available such as farmers, rat catchers, knife sharpeners, mail sorters, cattle ranchers, switchboard operators, analogue drafters, I can go on. Most of these jobs become scarce, some of them evolved and a lot of them has been taken over by technology.

Right now, there's social media recruiters, blockchain specialists, IT Software engineers, and most of the jobs that evolve one to overcome tech disruption and embrace it.

What about the future? How will it look like?
I've made an article on what jobs look like 100 years into the future, take a look.

How do people travel to their workplace back then?

Image result for travelling singapore 1960

Simply put, you remember those old videos you saw on the TV. It's basically the same but now there's no sampan, no trishaws, walking on foot for kilometres. All transport is readily available for our local commuters. You can't really imagine how those people have a really hard time dealing with heat in the bus. Remember, back then got no air-con hor...

Now, everyone wishes to be transported by driverless cars and flying drones to work. Best yet, teleport there so you can go to work on time without your boss screaming at your face for your punctuality!

I think that's least of the common questions kids ask how was the past like for our locals.

So once again, we wish our nation happy birthday!
